One of the best ways to learn about yourself and your career interests is by speaking to people in your desired field. Networking helps build connections that can lead to career opportunities, mentorship, and industry insights. Don’t let the word “networking” intimidate you – it’s simply about connecting with and talking to people.
How to start
Identify who is in your network already. This includes a wide range of people both inside and outside your chosen field. Contacts fall into two categories: people you know (friends, family, neighbors, coworkers, professors) and people you don’t know but can connect with (alumni groups, honor societies, professional organizations, employer-hosted events, social networking websites).
Develop an elevator pitch or a story to introduce yourself. This should be a brief explanation of who you are, highlighting your skills and experience.
Create a list of questions you have about the industry, field, or person. These can cover broad industry trends, career paths, or the skills and training needed to succeed.
Build a “people plan.” Use these prompts to identify networking events or professionals you’d like to connect with.
